Development Blog for grepr

Saturday, December 23, 2006

Hi everyone,

It's been a busy couple of weeks with the holidays and all, but we have a couple of new features to mention.

The first feature we added is the ability to browse by language. We noticed we have received many international visitors, which was a pleasant suprise. We'd like to thank Genbeta again for their article and all of its readers of that site who have visited grepr. In response to these and future visitors we added this feature. We hope you all find it useful and if there is anything else we can do for international visitors, please let us know. Keep in mind we also allow you to filter on language, so that you only see shows in that language everywhere on the site when logged in.

Last week you did not hear from us as we were tied up working on backend changes for a big feature. So, this week we are very pleased to bring you a feature that took major work to implement...

We've removed the registration requirement for most of the functionality of grepr, including receiving recommendations to better provide the core functionality of grepr to our vistors.

There are still many benefits to registering, such as profiles, feeds and widgets. There are other features as well with more being planned for registered visitors but we wanted to be able to extend the functionality of grepr to visitors who are not ready to register. So, go try out the recommendations!

We hope you all have a great holiday. Hopefully we'll have another set of features just before the start of the new year!

A Week Full of Ups and Downs

Hi everyone,

Aside from some unexpected downtime this weekend, It has been a great week for grepr. Eric and I would like to apologize for any inconvenience this downtime may have caused. A change made to an automated process resulted in an issue causing the site to be down for roughly 24 hours.

Now onto the good news! We have begun to promote grepr and would like to thank two sites that were kind of enough to write reviews.

Pulse 2.0 covers the newest "web 2.0" sites. The article can be found here. I'd like to again thank Amit Chowdhry for all of the kind words he had to say about grepr. From the review, "The amount of potential that Grepr has makes me believe that the company could very much be the Yahoo! Music equivalent of podcasts."

GenBeta reviews new "web 2.0" sites for Spanish readers. While Eric and myself do not speak or read Spanish, we utlized multiple translating services to read the review. We'd like to thank Cyberfrancis for writing up a review for grepr. It is a very welcome surprise to notice grepr reaching a wider audience than originally expected.

We received new users from both sites, and we would love to hear feedback from all of you. Comments, concerns and criticisms can be sent to

Hope to hear from you,

grepr development team

Hi everyone,

It's been a busy week for us. We've been responding to feedback and implementing some more features and optimizations. As mentioned last week, we've been working on functionality involving the avatars. User profiles are now live on grepr. You can access any user's public profile by clicking on their username wherever you see a comment or review. You can also maintain your profile information through the account area found in the main menu. The address for any user is Two examples can be found here or here.

Hi again everyone,

We've been working on back end functionality such as optimizations and database related improvements. This was to allow us to offer new ways for you to access your information without coming to grepr directly. Below are some new features that we hope you'll find useful.

There is a new link in the main menu labeled "Connect To." This area provides how to:

- Add your subscriptions to your own website
- Receive your recommendations via an RSS feed
- Receive episodes of your recommendations directly through your podcast client (a feature that Eric and myself have been looking forward to implementing)

We've also added the ability for users to upload avatar images. These will not appear throughout the site right away, but within the next week or two, we hope to release a new set of features that will incorporate this new addition.

As always, thank you for your feedback and we'll do our best to respond to it as quickly as possible.

Hi everyone,

This week we've been focusing on improving the backend abilities of the site to handle more podcasts and more users. We've increased our directory to more than 40,000 podcasts (33% increase over last week) and hope to have a much larger amount by this time next week.

We've also added a new filtering feature to grepr. Once visitors have signed in, they can filter what podcasts they view by language and by content rating. The accuracy of these filters will be based on the quality of the feeds in our directory.

As always we'd love to hear feedback from anyone that visits, and hope you all are enjoying the site.
